New York Comic Con | Marvel, Super Mario, Star Trek & More
The costumed cosplayers are ready to flood the streets of New York this week as fans prepare for the return of New York Comic Con 2022.
Although its name can be confused with the world-famous San Diego Comic-Con, this New York event is not associated with most other U.S. conventions. Organized by Reedpop, the newly announced producer of E3, the New York event has grown since its 2006 beginning as a competitor to the San Diego event, drawing a record 260,000 people in 2019. ReedPop had recently shared a sneak peek with their fans and provided everyone with a glance of the New York Comic panels for 2022, with more to come as the event launches this week.
FGPG breaks down the latest updates, panels, and more. We will walk you through this year’s comic-filled event and how its return marks another milestone for the return of live events, trade shows, and brand experiences.
New York Comic Con 2022, Tickets, Schedule, and more
As the New York Comic Con returns for another round of pop culture, themed events, brand experiences, and booths, we go over everything you need to know to be prepared for the jam-packed week. Fans of the biggest pop culture community will reunite from October 6-9, 2022, for a weekend starring everyone’s favorite brands, stars, and activities.
Here is the chance for fans to finally meet the stars and creators of their favorite TV shows, movies, and comic books at the annual pop culture convention in New York this week. With a long checklist to go through in preparation for the comic event, it’s essential to know the details to maximize your experience. Here are some points to help your comic book week get started.
Where is NYCC being held? NYCC is held annually at Javits Center in New York, from October 6-9. The show floor will be open from Thursday, Oct. 6 to Saturday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Sunday, Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Artist Alley, a section of the show floor dedicated to pop culture artists, closes at 8 p.m. The panels run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday to Saturday of the convention, and on Sunday, they will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This year, there will also be an option to attend the convention online by purchasing a digital ticket. That includes access to most live streams of the panels, audio streams for smaller panels, and recordings of the streams for 30 days following the event.
New York Comic Con 2022 Crashes Servers Due to Demand
NYCC is off to an early start, as the events reservations faced obstacles for their reservations systems. The event’s official Twitter posted an apologetic message, communicating that its servers could not withstand the high volume of reservations made by would-be attendees. While the planners had anticipated a significant influx, they still failed to predict the onslaught of activity that bombarded their hardware, rendering attempts by customers temporarily useless.
At the moment, their approach is to occasionally pause the process and take what reservations they can handle in small bunches, at least until the storm subsides. The annual October event only grows in size in scope each year, which makes it a challenge for event organizers to anticipate the influx of attendees every year.
Most Anticipated Panels, Brand Experiences, & Activations
Begin your entertainment at NYCC by deciding to join in the cosplay contests, but the event is expected to welcome thousands of attendees of all ages to NYC. For just the fans, this year shows off a lineup of over 200 screenings and panels.
Guests can expect to catch the pilot of HBO Max’s Velma (Main Stage on October 6 from 3:30–5 pm), Dan Harmon presenting his next animated sitcom Krapopolis (Main Stage on October 7 at 11 am), and cast and creators discussing the new season of the Neil Gaiman novel-based show Good Omens (Empire Stage on October 7 at 11 am), a Smallville cast reunion (Main Stage on October 8 at 12:30 pm), Jamie Lee Curtis in conversation with Drew Barrymore for her Halloween Ends return on-screen (Empire Stage on October 8 at 6:15 pm), a Back to the Future reunion (Main Stage on October 8 at 6:30 pm), and even a Q&A with Oscar Isaac (Empire Stage on October 9 at 12:15 pm). For a complete list of screenings and panels, you can head to this website.
One of Comic Con’s biggest appeals is the opportunity to meet your favorite actors, directors, and artists in real life. While getting a spot in line for a meet & greet or an autograph signing session can be challenging (especially with Hollywood’s most prominent personalities), it isn’t impossible.
With more than 300 people expected to be available for photo ops and autographs, attendees will have plenty to choose from when planning their New York Comic Con experience. Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd from Back to the Future are slated to be among them, and Todd McFarlane, the creator of the comic book series Venom and Spawn, will also be among the guests. Fans of The Office will get the chance to meet Mindy Kaling, and Harry Potter fans will have to try to make some magic happen to get in line for Daniel Radcliffe. Marvel aficionados will have their share of joy, too, as Sebastian Stan (who plays the Winter Soldier) is set to be available for photo ops and autographs. For a complete list of guests, you can visit this link.
Attendees will have plenty of time to tour the convention’s grounds and marvel at beautiful art and exhibitions. Among the many exhibitors, guests can find Studio Ghibli, Midtown Comics, and Funko. To see artists making their art, you can always head to Artist Alley, where comic book and illustration drawing will take place.
